David Garcia- A
Gun Violence cost AZ 1.9 Billion per year. What will you do to address this?
Gun violence has spun completely out of control and we can’t keep asking people to go about their lives in perpetual fear in order to protect the unfettered use of things like assault weapons, bump stocks, and high capacity magazines.
I served as a marksman in the U.S. Army and I know that the purpose of an assault weapon is to kill as many people as quickly as possible. These weapons have no place on our streets. That’s why I have been public and unequivocal about the need for banning them, ensuring universal comprehensive background checks on all gun purchases, and instituting a waiting period. As governor, I will also add domestic violence offenders and the seriously mentally ill to the list of prohibited possessors.
Let’s face it, it’s harder to register to vote in Arizona than it is to buy a gun. That’s crazy and has to change. In a David Garcia administration, it will.
What have you done to prevent Gun Violence?
Gun violence is everywhere, but has had a particular impact on school safety across the country. As an educator, the former Associate Superintendent of Public Instruction for the state of Arizona, and a member of the board of directors for the Arizona School for the Arts, I have been closely involved in school safety planning, and one thing I know is that arming teachers is not the answer.
Instead, we need to deal with the fact that Arizona has a shameful ratio of one guidance counselor for every 900 students. We need to step up anti-bullying programs and we need to engage the community in watching out for children. These are programs I have worked for and advocated for in the past, and when I’m governor I will be in a position to implement them.
I’m determined to end gun violence, and that’s why I speak out against it everywhere I go. But it is crucial to understand that no candidate’s positions on the issue matter if they can’t win in November. Four years ago, I came within half a percent of winning statewide office, and my experience as a veteran makes me unique in this race. Governor Ducey has never served in the military and I look forward to going to toe-to-toe against him and the NRA on these issues.
Our time is now. Every poll conducted on the General Election shows I am the strongest Democrat against Governor Ducey. In fact, I remain the only Democrat who can and actually is beating him in the polls.
I am also proud to be endorsed by a number of Arizona’s most active progressive organizations, including Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona, Arizona Education Association, the Working Families Party, National Organization for Women, People for the American Way, Democracy for America, LUCHA, People’s Action, Latino Victory Fund, VoteVets, Arizona AFL-CIO, Progressive Change Campaign Committee, UNITE HERE!, Sheet Metal Workers Union Local #359, UFCW Local 99, to name just a few. I am also endorsed by the vast majority of Arizona’s elected state representatives and state senators.
We are on the edge of making major changes in Arizona’s gun safety laws and March for Our Lives can be a key part of making that happen. I would be truly proud to tackle these important issues with your support.
